Major grant aims to strengthen Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s capacity
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art announced Thursday it has received a $2.5 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., one of a dozen invitational awards statewide intended to bolster art museums’ ability to serve their communities.
The museum said the funding will be directed toward initiatives designed to
"increase its capacity for expanded organizational and service excellence"and to help the institution better preserve and share its collections.
Officials outlined several planned uses for the grant. Work will emphasize facility planning and upgrades to how the museum stores and manages its collection, along with new equipment purchases and research into museum best practices. The money will also support professional training, inclusivity developments and efforts to broaden the museum’s online presence and digital collection resources.
- Facility planning and infrastructure improvements
- Collection storage and preservation upgrades
- Equipment purchases and technology for digital access
- Staff training, museum practice research and inclusivity projects
Those priorities reflect long-term needs common to midsize museums: safeguarding artworks, expanding access, and strengthening organizational practices so institutions can serve larger and more diverse audiences. For Fort Wayne, the grant could accelerate projects that otherwise would wait for public funding cycles or separate capital campaigns.
| Area | Intended use |
|---|---|
| Facilities | Planning and upgrades to better host exhibitions and visitors |
| Collections | Improved storage and preservation systems |
| Digital | Expanded online access and digital collection resources |
| Workforce | Professional training and research into museum best practices |
The award is part of Lilly Endowment’s invitational program to support Indiana art museums in "strengthen[ing] and enhance[ing] their ability to contribute to cultural vibrancy in their communities and regions." For the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the grant may improve local cultural infrastructure and support programming that draws visitors to downtown Fort Wayne.
Beyond immediate improvements, the investment could affect the museum’s role as a regional arts hub. Upgraded storage and digital access make loan agreements and traveling exhibits easier, potentially increasing the museum’s profile and economic impact. Enhanced training and inclusivity work could broaden participation among Allen County residents who have historically been underserved by arts institutions.
The museum has not announced a detailed timeline for projects funded by the grant. Museum leaders say they will share more information about specific initiatives and community benefits as plans are finalized.
As the city seeks to grow cultural tourism and strengthen downtown assets, philanthropic investments like this one provide a push for institutions that serve educational, artistic and economic functions across the region.
