City leaders and community partners have added six new weekly offerings to the summer calendar at Rosa Parks Circle, the Maya Lin–designed public plaza in downtown Grand Rapids. The additions expand opportunities for exercise, dance, family activity and alcohol-free socializing through the summer months.
What’s new this summer
The new slate of programming complements longstanding events such as Tuesday Night Swing Dance. According to the city’s special events manager, Evette Pittman, the changes respond to community interest in inclusive, varied downtown activities.
“Rosa Parks Circle has always been a place where people come together,” said Evette Pittman. “These new events give our community even more reasons to gather, dance and enjoy summer in the heart of our city.”
The offerings are free or low-cost and aim to serve a range of ages and ability levels. Organizers say some sessions may rotate between Fridays and Saturdays and that a few may carry a participation fee.

Why this matters to Grand Rapids residents
Rosa Parks Circle sits at the cultural core of downtown Grand Rapids and functions as both a destination and a daily gathering place. By introducing options that range from fitness-focused classes to sober social hours, city organizers are broadening how the plaza serves residents, families and evening visitors.
- Accessible programming: Many events are free and scheduled at times that accommodate both families and working adults.
- Variety: Offerings include multi-generational activities (roller skate nights), cultural celebration (Latin dance) and alcohol-free social options.
- Community building: The schedule creates regular neighborhood touchpoints downtown throughout the week.
Residents interested in attending should check the city’s event listings for any updates on dates, possible participation fees, and location details. Special programming also includes a full-day event on Aug. 22 running from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., which may offer additional opportunities for engagement.
These additions join existing seasonal offerings at the Circle and reflect ongoing efforts by city staff and community partners to animate downtown public spaces during the summer season.
