Broward County Public Schools is partnering with Space Florida to bring the Space Florida Academy to nine district high schools, including Miramar High. The program is designed to connect classroom instruction with careers in aerospace, aviation, engineering and advanced manufacturing — giving Miramar students a clearer route into high-demand STEM fields.
What changes for Miramar students
Miramar High already operates an Aviation Magnet Program in partnership with Broward College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. With the academy joining district offerings, students at Miramar High should gain additional industry-aligned coursework, training opportunities and access to a job portal that highlights employers who prefer Academy graduates.
- Expanded career pathways in aerospace and aviation for Miramar High students.
- Access to a job portal listing companies with hiring preferences for program graduates.
- Coordination between the district and Space Florida to leverage existing aviation programs.
“Through the Space Florida Academy, Broward County Public Schools is expanding opportunities for students to explore cutting-edge careers while developing the skills necessary for success in college and today’s competitive workforce,” BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn said in a July 8 news release.
Who is involved
Space Florida is the state’s aerospace economic development authority, created by the Florida Legislature in 2006 to grow the state’s presence in the space and aerospace industry and support space-related businesses. Broward County Public Schools will host the academy at high schools that already have aerospace and engineering programs, according to district information.
| Organization | Known role |
|---|---|
| Broward County Public Schools | Local district partner hosting academy sites |
| Space Florida | State aerospace economic development authority sponsoring the academy |
| Miramar High School | Existing Aviation Magnet Program; one of nine launch sites |
| Broward College & Embry-Riddle | Existing Miramar High aviation partners |
What’s still unknown for families
The district has not yet released details on the academy’s start date or the application process for students. News Block requested additional information from BCPS but had not received a response as of July 10. Parents and students in Miramar should watch for announcements from BCPS about enrollment timelines, program offerings and any prerequisites tied to Miramar High’s Aviation Magnet.
The addition of the Space Florida Academy aims to deepen career and technical education in Broward County. For Miramar families, that could mean earlier exposure to aerospace industry standards, potential internships or employer connections, and targeted training that aligns with state and regional workforce needs.
