Downtown set for large-scale public art event
The Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s Chalk Walk and Arts United’s heART in the Park return to downtown Fort Wayne this weekend, bringing a mix of large-format sidewalk art, live music and a regional art sale that organizers say will draw as many as 50,000 people to Main Street and nearby plazas.
What to expect
Chalk Walk, now in its 26th year, converts Main Street into an open-air studio where artists work in assigned squares using pastels. Participants may choose 4-by-4 or 8-by-8 foot spaces to reproduce or design original works. A panel from the Fort Wayne Museum of Art will judge entries across multiple categories, giving the event a competitive and community-oriented edge.
- Event: Chalk Walk — Main Street
- Anniversary: 26th year
- Estimated attendance: Nearly 50,000
- heART in the Park: Freimann Square Park and Arts United Center Plaza, two-day art sale with dozens of vendors
Judging and programming highlights
Judging categories reflect a mix of playful and thematic subjects. Organizers listed categories that include Best Use of a Street/Sidewalk Blemish, Trompe l’oeil, People’s Choice and several themed awards such as Classic American Literature and America @ 250. There is also recognition for young artists: Best Square by an Artist Under 12.
"Chalk Walk is the largest community art project in the region," organizers said, emphasizing participation across a range of experience levels.
heART in the Park and downtown impact
heART in the Park, staged at Freimann Square Park and the Arts United Center Plaza, is a two-day art sale featuring dozens of regional creatives offering a variety of media and price points. Live music performances are scheduled throughout the weekend, and both events are free and open to the public.
| Event | Location | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Chalk Walk | Main Street | All weekend (public viewing ongoing) |
| heART in the Park | Freimann Square Park & Arts United Center Plaza | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday |
Combined, the events provide a boost to downtown foot traffic and visibility for regional artists and businesses. For a city that markets itself as a growing Midwest hub for culture and small business, seasonal gatherings such as these help sustain retail activity and civic engagement in the heart of Fort Wayne.
Both Chalk Walk and heART in the Park are free to attend; organizers encourage residents and visitors to check the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and Arts United websites for any last-minute updates.
