KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The KC Streetcar recorded a historic month in June, posting 698,705 passenger trips — the largest single-month total since the line opened, the authority announced.
Ridership surge driven by World Cup events and downtown attractions
Daily use averaged about 23,290 trips across the month, with peak days tied to FIFA Fan Fest and match-related activity sending numbers substantially higher. On Fan Fest days, average daily ridership rose to 34,139 trips, the authority said. The streetcar system recorded its three busiest days in June on:
- June 19 — 41,112 trips
- June 20 — 41,398 trips
- June 27 — 48,260 trips
"For the first time in the streetcar's history, a total of 698,705 passenger trips were recorded in a month."
The KC Streetcar Authority highlighted that roughly 130,000 trips were taken to and from the FIFA Fan Fest at the National World War I Museum and Memorial over the month. At the same time, officials emphasized that the Fan Fest did not account for the majority of travel: about 75% of June trips served regular downtown destinations including the City Market, Power & Light District, Country Club Plaza and the KCMO riverfront.
Implications for city transit and downtown commerce
The surge demonstrates how major international events can amplify demand for fixed-route transit in Kansas City — not only ferrying visitors to game-related gatherings but also channeling them into local businesses and cultural districts. The streetcar's performance underscores the system's role as both an event shuttle and a daily circulator for residents and tourists.
City leaders and business owners watching the numbers will want to consider several operational and planning questions as large events recur across the region:
- How to manage peak loads without degrading service for regular riders.
- Whether temporary adjustments — added trains, crowd control at stops, or expanded partnerships with shuttle services — are needed for future large-scale events.
- Opportunities to convert one-time visitors into repeat customers for downtown districts and cultural sites.
What the numbers show
Presented here are the month and peak-day figures released by the KC Streetcar Authority:
| Metric | Number |
|---|---|
| Total trips in June | 698,705 |
| Average daily trips (June) | 23,290 |
| Average daily trips on Fan Fest days | 34,139 |
| Trips to/from Fan Fest (June) | 130,000 |
For comparison, the authority noted 162,057 trips were recorded in June 2025.
Looking ahead
Officials also pointed out that the streetcar totals do not include riders who used the KCATA "Streetcar Link" buses, which assisted with first- and last-mile connections during the World Cup run. That caveat hints at an even broader transit footprint supporting the influx of fans and visitors to Kansas City's core.
For residents and business owners, the numbers offer a measurable snapshot of how international events can reshape travel patterns here — boosting foot traffic, putting pressure on transit resources and offering a chance to showcase downtown amenities to a global audience.
As Kansas City considers bids for future events and refines strategies for large crowds, the streetcar's record month will factor into planning for operations, crowd management and efforts to convert event-driven visitors into long-term customers and residents.
