The City of Scottsdale has closed the popular Brown's Ranch Trailhead at 30301 N. Alma School Parkway as crews begin a $1.17 million improvement project that city officials say will run through the fall of 2026.

What is closing and why

Work that began July 13 will shut the trailhead building, the parking lot and portions of the surrounding trail network while crews reconfigure access and protect sensitive desert habitat. The improvements are funded through Scottsdale’s 2004 Preservation Sales Tax and are described by the city as being designed to improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance the visitor experience.

"designed to improve safety, reduce congestion and enhance the visitor experience"

The construction scope includes a redesigned parking lot with improved drainage and traffic flow, new lighting and roof work for the trailhead building, creation of a trail dispersal area and the rerouting of five trail segments to minimize impacts on fragile desert areas.

Where visitors can go instead

Scottsdale is asking people not to park on nearby residential streets or in adjacent neighborhoods while Brown’s Ranch is closed. Hikers who still want access to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve are encouraged to use alternate trailheads:

  • Pima/Dynamite Trailhead
  • Fraesfield Trailhead
  • Granite Mountain Trailhead
  • Tom’s Thumb Trailhead

Officials note that Tom’s Thumb, Fraesfield and Granite Mountain do not have drinking water available, so visitors should plan accordingly.

Safety and environmental measures

Construction crews will follow an approved dust-control plan, operate an on-site water wagon and keep fire-suppression equipment at the site to reduce dust and lower wildfire risk during the work. With triple-digit temperatures persisting across the Valley, the city also reminded trail users to carry ample water, hike during cooler morning hours, wear sun protection and know their limits before heading out.

Project item Detail
Location 30301 N. Alma School Parkway (Brown's Ranch Trailhead)
Cost $1.17 million
Funding source 2004 Preservation Sales Tax
Work started July 13, 2026
Estimated completion Fall 2026

For regular visitors, Brown’s Ranch is one of the busiest gateways into the Preserve, and the temporary loss of the trailhead will strain nearby access points. That effect is part of a statewide pattern: as Arizona cities invest in preserving open space, short-term closures and reroutes are common when agencies balance public access with long-term conservation and safety upgrades.

Residents who rely on Brown’s Ranch for daily walks, group runs or weekend hikes should plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time. The city’s message is clear — upgrades aim to make the Preserve safer and more sustainable, but they come with immediate trade-offs for access while work continues.
