MONROE — Two men are in custody after authorities say they broke into a marijuana retail store early Sunday, set a fire inside and were captured following a canine track through nearby woods.

What happened

Monroe County Central Dispatch received an alarm call at about 2 a.m. on July 12 for Dacut Cannabis Company, located at 14921 LaPlaisance Road. Deputies arriving on scene discovered a broken front window and smoke coming from the building's interior.

Investigators say the two suspects forced entry, poured an accelerant inside the shop and ignited it before leaving on foot. Additional law enforcement units established a perimeter and deployed a police service dog, which located the suspects hiding in a nearby tree line.

"Their names are being withheld pending formal arraignment in the 1st District Court."

The two men — a 24-year-old and a 25-year-old, both from Detroit — were taken into custody without incident and lodged at the Monroe County Jail. The sheriff’s office has turned the case over to detectives for further investigation.
