Two Hampton men were taken into custody after a Gloucester County residential burglary ended with the recovery of a large cache of firearms that had been removed from a home there, authorities said.
Investigation traced stolen safe to Hampton address
Gloucester County Sheriff's Office investigators were notified July 9 of a nighttime break-in on Homeplace Lane. Deputies determined the house had been unoccupied when, they say, a contractor who had worked at the residence earlier returned and removed a safe containing multiple guns and personal documents.
Using evidence at the scene, detectives identified a suspect and the vehicle used to move the safe. They tracked the vehicle to the 1600 block of Aberdeen Road in Hampton. When officers encountered the man outside that residence, he fled on foot. With assistance from the Hampton Police Division, investigators mounted a search and obtained arrest warrants, but the first suspect remained at large that night.
Searches in Hampton lead to arrests and firearm recoveries
Continuing the investigation through the night and into the next morning, detectives followed leads to the 100 block of Cynthia Drive in Hampton, where they located the vehicle connected to the burglary. A search of a residence there produced one of the stolen firearms.
Gloucester detectives, Hampton police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives later located and arrested Jamie Scott Futrell, 48, at a different Hampton location without incident. Further investigation at a nearby backyard on Cynthia Drive uncovered an additional 17 stolen firearms, and authorities arrested a second Hampton resident, William Robert Bullock, 54.
"Police say additional charges for both suspects are forthcoming, and the incident remains under investigation."
Charges and next steps
Both men were charged in Gloucester County with grand larceny and entering a dwelling house with intent to commit larceny, assault and battery, or another felony. Bullock also faces a charge of possession or transportation of firearms by a convicted felon. Both suspects are listed as Hampton residents.
