Federal aviation officials have approved roughly $29.97 million in grant funding for airports across Nevada, money that state leaders say will support runway repairs, pavement work, hangar upgrades and improved weather observation systems.
Where the money will go
U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen announced the awards, saying they helped secure 12 grants from the Federal Aviation Administration. The funds are intended for a range of infrastructure projects at airports throughout the state, including pavement and utility upgrades, modernization of runways and taxiways, improvements to weather observation equipment and hangar updates.
"Nevada's airports are the gateway to our state – for visitors, for emergency services, and for Nevadans traveling throughout the Silver State and across America," Cortez Masto said. "It's critical that all the airports across Nevada continue to have world-class facilities and infrastructure. Nevada's Congressional delegation will never stop fighting to deliver for our state's aviation infrastructure."
Among the grants detailed by the senators' joint statement were several with specific dollar amounts and project descriptions:
- Harry Reid International Airport (Las Vegas): nearly $3.6 million for pavement rehabilitation and other future improvements.
- Mesquite Airport: $769,028 to reconstruct about 25,000 square yards of aircraft apron pavement and to rebuild a gravel road used by airport and FAA vehicles and ground service equipment.
- Lincoln County Airport (near Panaca): $160,901 to construct a 1,500-square-foot building to store snow removal equipment.
Local impact and context
Airport infrastructure projects can affect a broad set of activities — commercial travel, tourism, medical and emergency flights, and freight movements. Pavement and runway work improve safety and allow airports to maintain service levels as aircraft weights and operations change. Weather observation upgrades help pilots and air traffic controllers with better, more reliable environmental data.
While the announcement lists 12 FAA grants in total, the senators highlighted examples that cover both major and smaller local airports. The mix of projects — from major pavement rehab at a primary international airport to a small equipment building in a rural county — reflects the varied infrastructure needs across Nevada's aviation system.
| Airport | Project focus | Allocated amount |
|---|---|---|
| Harry Reid International (Las Vegas) | Pavement rehabilitation and related improvements | $3.6 million (approx.) |
| Mesquite Airport | Apron reconstruction; gravel road rebuild | $769,028 |
| Lincoln County Airport (near Panaca) | Snow removal equipment building (1,500 sq. ft.) | $160,901 |
Local airport managers typically must follow FAA guidelines for grant administration and project completion, including environmental reviews and competitive bidding for construction contracts. Communities with smaller airports often rely on these periodic federal infusions to maintain key facilities that otherwise lack large local funding sources.
Residents and travelers can expect construction timelines and temporary operational changes to be announced by the individual airports as projects move from planning into bid and construction phases.
