Flooding concentrates in Oakley, Madisonville and Pleasant Ridge

Heavy storms that moved through Cincinnati Friday evening produced rapid flash flooding, prompting the Cincinnati Fire Department to respond to at least 40 water rescues and reports of inundated roadways, homes and public transit vehicles.

Fire Chief Frank McKinley said most calls came from the neighborhoods of Oakley, Madisonville and Pleasant Ridge. The majority involved motorists stranded in high water and residential emergencies as floodwaters rose quickly about 5 p.m., coinciding with evening traffic.

"It was the perfect storm, the time of day, along with the weather that came through and so it did kind of complicate things, but we were able to respond and again we don't have reports but one injury," McKinley said.

Interstate 71 lanes closed, Metro bus flooded

Traffic cameras showed backups on Interstate 71 around 6 p.m. as water spilled into lanes. Multiple lanes of the interstate remained closed for hours while crews worked to clear and drain affected stretches. A Metro bus was partially flooded while passengers were on board, with video showing water covering seats near Highland Avenue and Ridge Avenue.

  • Water rescues: at least 40
  • Reported injuries: 1 (hospitalized in stable condition)
  • Neighborhoods with concentrated calls: Oakley, Madisonville, Pleasant Ridge

Notable rescue, continued monitoring

One notable rescue in Madisonville required Cincinnati and Colerain first responders to carry a couple through flood waters in a raft. The couple was evacuated from their home near Camberwall and Harrow Avenue, adjacent to Duck Creek.

Chief McKinley said officials were keeping crews on alert for additional rainfall later Friday evening and would deploy resources as needed. He did not provide details on the cause of the one reported injury or the exact circumstances of every call.

For Cincinnati and Hamilton County officials, the flooding underscores ongoing vulnerability to intense, localized downpours that can overwhelm urban drainage and quickly disrupt rush-hour traffic. The closures on a major artery such as I-71 affected commuters and freight movement through and out of the city during evening peak hours.

Residents are advised to avoid driving through standing water, follow updates from the Cincinnati Fire Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation, and prepare for the possibility of additional storms and localized flooding in the near term.
