NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. — A man arrested on a first-degree sexual assault charge escaped custody Friday afternoon, barricaded himself in a residence and was later found dead by law enforcement after a standoff, Nebraska City police said.
Police identified the suspect as Jackson Kelly. Officers took Kelly into custody on the assault charge just before 4 p.m., the department said. While officers were en route to transport him to the jail, Kelly ran from them and entered a home near 5th Corso and 8th Street, according to the department.
Authorities posted on social media asking people to avoid the area as officers contained the scene. Because Kelly’s arrest was a felony and investigators alleged he possessed firearms, the Nebraska City Police Department requested assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol.
State troopers negotiate before tactical entry
Investigators said troopers attempted repeatedly to persuade Kelly to surrender. When negotiations did not yield a resolution, a SWAT team entered the residence and located Kelly in the basement.
“The department says no officers fired their weapons, and no officers were hurt.”
Police believe Kelly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the department said. No officers were reported injured during the incident.
Next steps and oversight
Because the encounter followed an arrest and involved potential use of force, the department said a grand jury will review the case in accordance with Nebraska statute. The investigation will include actions by local officers and the Nebraska State Patrol.
- Suspect: Jackson Kelly
- Charge at time of arrest: First-degree sexual assault
- Location of standoff: Home near 5th Corso and 8th Street, Nebraska City
- Response: Nebraska City Police, Nebraska State Patrol, SWAT team
- Outcome: Suspect found dead in basement; believed self-inflicted gunshot wound; no officers fired or were injured
Officials have not released additional details about the alleged assault, motives, or the specific timeline between Kelly’s escape and the tactical entry. News Block will update this report as the investigation develops and the grand jury process proceeds.
