OMAHA, Neb. — A 10-year-old boy who was critically injured in a crash Thursday evening near 114th Street and West Center Road has died, Omaha police confirmed. The collision also left a 5-year-old and two adults hospitalized, and police arrested a 28-year-old on multiple DUI-related charges.

What happened

Police say the collision occurred at about 6:30 p.m. when a Subaru Impreza attempting to turn was struck by an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu. The force of the impact split the Subaru in two, according to officers at the scene.

"Omaha police said the 10-year-old boy injured in a crash has died."

Emergency crews performed CPR on two children at the scene. The 10-year-old later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. A 5-year-old was also transported to a hospital with CPR in progress. Two adults, including the driver of the Malibu, were taken to area hospitals with critical injuries.

Arrest and charges

The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu was identified by police as 28-year-old Tanner Hunt. Omaha police arrested Hunt and booked him on several charges, including:

  • Two counts of driving under the influence causing serious injury
  • Refusing a DUI test
  • Driving under revocation
  • No proof of insurance

Investigators said the inquiry into the crash is ongoing. Court records reviewed by news investigators show Hunt has prior interactions with law enforcement related to impaired driving. An affidavit from a previous stop in Bellevue says Hunt recorded a blood alcohol concentration of .126 and exhibited signs of impairment during field sobriety testing. In that earlier incident, an officer reported a strong odor of alcohol and bloodshot, watery eyes.

Local impact and next steps

The crash has prompted renewed attention to roadway safety in west Omaha neighborhoods where families and children travel for school and activities. Omaha Police Department officials did not immediately say whether charges could change as investigators review evidence and toxicology results.

Person Age Status / Charge
Unnamed child 10 Deceased
Unnamed child 5 Hospitalized (CPR performed)
Tanner Hunt 28 Hospitalized (critical); arrested on multiple DUI-related charges

Omaha police ask anyone with information about the crash to contact the department. Further statements and any updates on charges are expected as detectives continue their work and prosecutors review the case.

This is a developing story; News Block will provide updates as additional official information becomes available from Omaha police and county prosecutors.
