Two young students were shaken but uninjured after a school bus en route to Belmont Runyon Elementary School collided with a car on Newark’s Highland Avenue early Friday, city officials said.

The crash occurred about 7:40 a.m. on the 100 block of Highland Avenue as the bus was transporting two 7-year-old children and two adults to Belmont Runyon Elementary, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.

The bus struck a car that was pulling out of a parking spot. Emergency medical services evaluated the drivers and passengers at the scene, and no injuries were reported, Miranda said.

“No injuries have been reported, although the drivers and passengers were evaluated at the scene by EMS,”

Investigation and immediate response

Police were called to the scene and are continuing to investigate the collision. Miranda said no charges were filed following the initial response.

Local context and consequences

Incidents involving school buses prompt immediate concern from parents and school officials because they involve young, vulnerable passengers and can disrupt morning routines. While this crash did not result in injuries, it will likely prompt school transportation staff and city safety officials to review procedures where buses pick up students and how nearby parking and traffic movements are managed.

The Newark Public Safety Department handled the initial investigation and evaluation on scene. Any follow-up actions or findings from the ongoing investigation have not yet been released by police.
