Rochester marked the opening of its locally timed Pride season this weekend with gatherings that blended celebration and memory, as community groups prepared for a larger parade and festival later this month.

On Sunday, hundreds gathered at Genesee Valley Park for the city’s 54th annual Pride Picnic, hosted by Rainbow Seniors ROC. The event included music, food and arts vendors and offered a chance for longtime activists and newer community members to connect in person.

"It started at the U of R, the gay liberation front. There were just a handful of us, and many people from the city started to join us. We had great functions, like dances with live bands, so the students would come and hang out with us too. And it was a time for learning and culture," said Patricia Evans.

Flag-raising and community performances Monday

City leaders and LGBTQ community members will gather Monday at Austin Steward Plaza along the Genesee Riverway Trail for a Pride flag-raising ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m.. The event will include the sashing of the Pride Grand Marshal and a performance by the Rochester Women’s Community Chorus.

Highland Park festival and parade set for July 18

The main community celebration returns to Highland Park on Saturday, July 18. The schedule calls for the Pride Parade to assemble at 11 a.m. at South Avenue and Science Parkway, then proceed north on Highland Avenue to the park for the festival, which runs through 6 p.m. The festival will feature live music, food, arts vendors and drag performances.

  • Rochester’s Pride celebrations take place in July to avoid overlap with nearby cities that observe Pride in June.

While many cities mark National Pride Month in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Manhattan, Rochester schedules its major events in July so they do not conflict with nearby Buffalo and Syracuse observances, according to Trillium Health.

Community leaders and longtime participants said the July schedule allows Rochester to host its own sustained season of events — from neighborhood picnics to the larger Highland Park festival — and keeps local organizers, vendors and volunteers focused on one slate of citywide activities.

Residents seeking more information or a full list of events can consult the Rochester LGBTQ+ Together calendar for updates and vendor or volunteer details ahead of July 18.

The weekend’s picnic and Monday’s flag-raising served as reminders that Rochester’s Pride season spans generations: elders who helped build early organizing networks alongside students and newer activists, meeting in public spaces to remember, to learn and to celebrate.
