Wine bar aims to add evening life and local music to downtown Rockford
A new wine bar opened this week in the heart of downtown Rockford, offering curated bottles, small plates and a regular schedule of live music intended to draw residents into the city center. Palace Wine Bar is located at 202 N. Main St., in the space that was formerly Palace Shoe Repair and the adjacent Downtown Shoes & Boutique.
Owners Mark Podemski and Lucretia Ristin purchased the properties more than two years ago and renovated the combined space into a venue they hope will become a neighborhood destination. The bar’s grand opening began at 5 p.m. Thursday.
General manager Amanda Jensen said the bar is launching with a selection designed to appeal to a range of customers.
“We’ve got about 65 bottles here to get started with something for everybody. Things that you may be very familiar with and things that you’ve maybe never seen before,”Jensen said.
The wine list was assembled by wine steward Dan Scroggins and will be offered by the glass, by flight or by bottle. The menu also includes beers, nonalcoholic beverages and light fare such as charcuterie boards and other small treats.
Regular music nights aim to showcase local talent
Palace Wine Bar plans two weekly performance series intended to build a steady late-night and weekend audience:
- Downtown After Dark — a late-night jazz series each Friday, kicking off at 8:30 p.m. this Friday with the Samuel Caiola Trio;
- Local Sounds — a Saturday night showcase of local singers and songwriters, beginning at 7 p.m. this Saturday.
The emphasis on music and curated wine suggests the owners are pursuing both neighborhood hospitality and ties to Rockford’s arts community. City residents and downtown visitors now have another option for evening dining and entertainment on Main Street.
