An 18-year-old man who had just graduated from Pomperaug High School died early Saturday after his moped collided with a pickup truck on Middlebury Road, Middlebury police said.
Middlebury Police identified the rider as David Young. The crash occurred about 12:30 a.m. in front of the Dunkin' Donuts plaza, according to authorities. Young was transported to Waterbury Hospital, where he later died.
What officials say
Pomperaug High School and the Region 15 School District confirmed Young had graduated this past school year. School officials said they have been in touch with the family and are offering support to students and staff.
"David was a funny and bright young man, and we will miss what he brought to the world. We have been in communication with his family and will continue to support them in this terrible time," Pomperaug High School Principal Paul Jones said in a statement.
First Selectwoman Jennifer Mahr also commented on the loss, noting the community's need to rally around the grieving family and affected classmates.

Middlebury police and school officials opened support resources for students. Pomperaug High School opened its library Saturday afternoon for any student who wanted to speak with a staff member or to be with classmates, the district said.
