The Africa Centres for Disease Prevention and Control has appealed for accelerated support for frontline teams responding to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, warning that the epidemic continues to spread and that healthcare workers remain at heightened risk.

As of July 9, the outbreak counts 1,947 cases and 704 deaths, with the majority occurring in the DRC. Authorities and partners have reported that 112 health care workers have been infected since the outbreak began, including 35 who have died.

Calls for protection and rapid resource flow
Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya urged donors and governments to ensure that pledges are disbursed quickly and that responders receive equipment, training and psychosocial support. He emphasized the elements needed to reduce risk to those carrying out surveillance, treatment and burial work.

The agency said the rapid release of committed funds and additional resources would bolster protection for responders, expand essential operations and help interrupt transmission chains.
Operational strains and workforce unrest
Strains on the response were underscored by strikes in Ituri province, where epidemiologists, case investigators, drivers and gravediggers walked off the job citing unpaid salaries and insufficient protective equipment. The role-based mix of strikers highlights the breadth of personnel required to sustain outbreak control activities, from surveillance to safe burials.
The DRC health minister told the Associated Press that delays in payment reflected ongoing identity verifications for workers, a process officials said is intended to guard against fraud but that responders say has left them unpaid for critical work.
Research response: vaccine trial launched
In parallel with operational needs, researchers have begun early-stage vaccine work specific to the causative virus. The outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus, which has been rare and for which no targeted licensed vaccines or treatments exist.
The University of Oxford’s vaccine group has started a phase 1 trial of a candidate named BD-Ebov. The study will enroll 50 healthy adults, ages 18 to 55, to assess initial safety and immune responses.
