DENVER — Police continue to investigate a fatal assault that left a man dead Saturday evening in downtown Denver. Officers were summoned to the 1300 block of Larimer Street near the intersection of Speer Boulevard at about 6:30 p.m., where they found a victim unresponsive in a grassy area, according to authorities.
First responders transported the man to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Denver Police Department has not released the victim's name.

A short time after officers arrived, investigators detained a suspect described by a witness. The person taken into custody has been identified as Edgardo Jimenez-Alvarad, 30. He was arrested near 14th and Champa streets and booked into the Denver County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, police said.

"The witness said there was no apparent verbal or physical altercation before the assault and that the victim never moved during the attack," police wrote in the affidavit.
Detectives interviewed the witness, who provided the detailed description that allowed officers to locate and apprehend the 30-year-old near 14th and Champa streets minutes after the assault, authorities said.
