TOLEDO, Ohio — Three people have died and two children remain hospitalized in critical condition after a family vehicle filled with carbon monoxide while stranded on the 300 block of Phillips Avenue on Wednesday, Toledo authorities said.
How responders found the scene
Police and fire crews were dispatched at about 11:10 a.m. July 15 after reports of unconscious people inside a vehicle near Detroit Avenue. Fire Chief Allison Armstrong said the adult in the car called the children’s father to report a flat tire; when the father arrived, he found all five people unconscious inside the vehicle.
First responders immediately began lifesaving measures and requested additional crews, including a HAZMAT team, because the cause of the medical emergency was unclear at first. All five victims were transported to area hospitals.
Officials identify cause, response challenges
Investigators determined the cause to be carbon monoxide exposure, and authorities said there is no ongoing public threat. Chief Armstrong said extreme heat complicated the on-scene response, both for patients and emergency personnel.
“The weather is very hot. That’s not only challenging for the responders, but for the patients themselves,” Armstrong said.
Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz issued a statement confirming that three family members died and that two children were hospitalized in critical condition. He asked the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers and thanked first responders for their work.
“Our hearts are with this family as they face an unimaginable loss, and we are praying for the recovery of the two children who continue to fight for their lives,” the mayor said.
