The military installation long called Joint Base Charleston was officially redesignated Joint Base Lindsey Graham during a ceremony on Aug. 10, military and state officials said. The 32-square-mile installation, which hosts the 437th Airlift Wing, will now bear the name of the late U.S. senator and Air Force veteran.
The change follows the death of Senator Lindsey Graham on July 12 at age 71 from an aortic dissection. Graham represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate from 2003 until his death in July 2026 and previously served in state and federal legislative roles.
What changes for residents and service members
The renaming is largely ceremonial but will be visible across the region as signage, official documents and base references are updated. The installation has carried the Joint Base Charleston name since the 2010 merger of Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station Charleston under the Department of Defense’s BRAC process.
- Official name change took effect Aug. 10 at the dedication ceremony.
- The base continues to provide global airlift capability using the C-17A Globemaster III aircraft.
- Operational units and missions, including the 437th Airlift Wing, remain in place.
The ceremony was hosted by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and attended by state leaders, including Governor Henry McMaster and U.S. Senator Darline Graham, who participated in the dedication.
"Sen. Lindsey Graham dedicated his life to serving this state and serving the armed forces of the United States," Secretary Hegseth said during the dedication. "He served this nation both in uniform and in both houses of Congress. But in both capacities, it was always the same mission. He knew the timeless truth that to ensure peace, we must be prepared for war."
Background and local impact
The installation was created in 2010 by merging the Air Force and Navy properties and has served as a regional economic and military hub for Charleston County ever since. The Department of War — cited in the dedication materials — noted the base’s role in providing global airlift capability to the joint force.

For residents near the installation, the most immediate effects will be visible: facility signage, base references in government and business materials, and the memorializing of a public figure with strong ties to the state and to the military. The base’s missions and the day-to-day operations that support service members and the local economy are not expected to change as a result of the renaming.
Local officials and base leaders did not announce changes to community programs or family services tied to the installation at the dedication. Any administrative updates, such as address references or official letterhead, will be handled through the appropriate military and civilian channels in the coming weeks.
