A wildfire that broke out Friday afternoon on the south side of Waikoloa Road prompted temporary evacuations and road closures before officials reported the blaze had moved away from populated areas of Waikoloa Village.
Fire response and evacuation details
The blaze was first reported about 4:20 p.m.. By 6:30 p.m., county officials estimated the fire had burned roughly 200 acres. The Hawaii Fire Department, assisted by volunteer firefighters, worked the incident with helicopters, tankers, engines and brush trucks.
Residents of Buildings 4 and 5 at The Lofts on Pua Melia Street were evacuated as a precaution. The evacuation order was lifted around 7:15 p.m. after firefighters said prevailing south-to-southwest winds were pushing the fire away from the community. A temporary shelter at Waikoloa Elementary School was closed and displaced residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Current status and public guidance
Officials reported no injuries and said there is currently no imminent threat to developed residential areas; no homes, buildings or infrastructure were damaged. Despite containment progress, road restrictions remain in effect and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
- Road closures: Waikoloa Road closed between Paniolo Avenue and Highway 190.
- Limited access: Waikoloa Road between Paniolo Avenue and Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway open only to local traffic.
- Delays expected: Drivers should plan for detours and slow-moving traffic near the scene.
Why this matters for Hawai‘i County
Wind-driven fires can change behavior rapidly in leeward Hawai‘i Island communities, threatening housing clusters, utilities and access routes. The quick mobilization of aerial and ground resources helped limit the hazard to roughly 200 acres, but the event highlights ongoing vulnerability during dry, windy conditions and the importance of readiness by residents and first responders.

Officials ask residents to stay alert for additional notices from Hawaii County and to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to continue operations. Motorists should use alternate routes until road closures are removed.
