NASA’s Psyche spacecraft photographed a striking series of views of Mars as it executed a gravity assist in May 2026, with the planet appearing first as a narrow crescent and then growing to fill the probe’s camera frame as approach distance decreased.

From crescent to near-full disk

The images were taken by Psyche’s multispectral imager between May 2 and May 15, 2026. Early frames show Mars at a high phase angle — meaning the spacecraft was viewing largely the planet’s night side — so sunlight illuminated only a thin crescent. As Psyche closed the distance, that crescent widened and the planet eventually overflowed the instrument’s field of view, at which point the mission team switched to capturing high-resolution surface imagery.

Mission scientists combined the approach, close-encounter and departure shots into a continuous time-lapse that documents the entire Mars encounter. The composite sequence highlights both changing illumination geometry and the probe’s changing perspective as it used Mars’ gravity to alter its trajectory.
