AURORA — A woman was taken into custody Saturday after officers responded to a reported residential burglary on the 100 block of South Edgelawn Drive and spent more than an hour negotiating with the person inside, Aurora police said.

Police secure neighborhood, negotiate for more than an hour

Officers were dispatched at about 9:14 a.m. after a neighbor reported a suspicious person on the property, according to the Aurora Police Department. When officers arrived they found evidence of forced entry at the home and encountered a woman who initially refused to come outside.

"Street was blocked off, tons of cops, and then, yeah, we couldn't get in,"

said neighbor Reece Wagner, who lives across the street and was among people temporarily prevented from returning to their homes while police secured the scene. Wagner later described the situation as "scary."

Members of the department's negotiating team and Special Response Team responded to the scene. After more than an hour of negotiations, officers took the woman into custody without further incident. She was taken to an area hospital for evaluation, police said.

No injuries; homeowners alerted by doorbell camera

Police reported no injuries to officers or residents. The homeowners were not at the residence when the incident occurred but later reviewed their doorbell camera and saw the woman on video, police said. Neighbors said the scene cleared about an hour after the arrest.
