Melvin H. Oros, a lifelong Aurora resident known for his steady work ethic, warm presence at local businesses and decades of involvement with Holy Angels Church, died July 7, 2026. He was 90.
Local life and service
Born Dec. 5, 1935, Oros was the youngest of 11 children of Michael and Emma (Mihalka) Oros. He graduated from East Aurora High School in 1954 and served in the United States Navy soon after, part of a generation of veterans who returned home to build careers and families in Aurora.
Following his military service, Oros spent nearly 39 years working for Northern Illinois Gas Company before retiring in 1995. He then continued to contribute to the local economy and social life by working nearly two more decades at Kennicott Flowers and at the Vaughan Athletic Center, where his friendly manner made him a familiar figure to customers and coworkers.
Community ties and pastimes
Active in his parish for more than six decades, Oros was a long-time member of Holy Angels Church. He also enjoyed regular social evenings at the Phoenix Club, where cards and conversation were part of his routine. Golf, and the memory of attending The Masters in Augusta, were among his cherished pastimes.
"He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, father in-law, grandfather, and great grandfather."
Sports were a central part of his identity: Oros was a devoted Cubs and Bears fan who treasured his memories of witnessing the Bears’ victory in Super Bowl XX and later seeing the Cubs win the World Series.

Oros was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Linda; four sons — Mark (Jean), Michael (Ann), David (Denise) and Patrick “PJ” (Lisa); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other extended family members.
