The combination of air pollutants Utahns commonly breathe is associated with a substantially higher risk of preterm birth, University of Utah researchers reported in a study published in June.
Using artificial intelligence to analyze exposures, researchers examined a cohort of almost 45,000 first-time pregnant people who delivered in Utah. They found that repeated exposure to a mixture of pollutants during early pregnancy — including combinations of ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) — was associated with nearly three times greater odds of delivering before term.
